McMaster’s Commitment and Approach to Experiential Learning

A Message from the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning)

Experiential learning (EL) is an institutional priority at McMaster University and an essential component of the high-quality educational experience we offer to learners. I am therefore pleased to introduce the Experiential Learning Strategic Framework, developed by my office in consultation with the broader McMaster community.

This framework introduces clear definitions and common language for EL, identifying key steps to enhance McMaster’s EL offerings. It seeks to bring together students, staff, instructors, community, and employers as partners in creating and implementing authentic EL opportunities.

EL foregrounds the need for self-determination in education, recognizing knowledge and skills which were developed and remain embedded within communities beyond academic studies and structures. By valuing and incorporating multiple ways of knowing and learning, we further broaden students’ perspectives and prepare them for futures as leaders toward a brighter world.

I invite you to explore this website, learning more about available resources and opportunities to get involved, as well as our goals for the coming years.

Sincerely,

Dr. Kim Dej Office of the Vice-Provost (Teaching and Learning)
