About the Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
I’m Maureen J. MacDonald, McMaster’s Provost and Vice-President (Academic). As the university’s Chief Academic and Budgetary Officer, I work closely with colleagues across campus to champion academic excellence, strengthen student supports and grow McMaster’s research impact. My role spans oversight of teaching and learning, faculty development, student experience, and strategic budgeting and planning. With a deep commitment to inclusive excellence, I strive to create an academic environment where our students, faculty, staff, researchers and other community members can thrive. That means investing in programs that expand access, foster innovation, and reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.

Supporting Teaching & Learning at McMaster Information and Updates
As Chief Academic Officer, the Provost oversees all six Faculties, working with Deans, Associate Deans and instructors to challenge norms in the classroom and inspire students to build a better future.
Strategic Budget Planning Finance & Planning
As Chief Budgetary Officer, the Provost oversees the strategic allocation of the university’s budget towards operations that support the five priorities in McMaster’s Strategic Plan.
Task Force on Graduate Funding Stay Updated
Graduate student funding is an important and complicated issue. In February 2023, a task force of graduate students and Faculty representatives from across McMaster was approved by Graduate Council.
STEER/R Program Inclusive Excellence Initiatives
The Strategic Excellence and Equity in Recruitment and Retention (STEER/R) Program launched in November 2020 to advance the pursuit of inclusive excellence by making seed funding available for transformative initiatives that benefit equity-deserving groups at McMaster University.
Strategic Alignment Funds (SAFs) SAF Initiatives
The SAFs support excellence, innovation and renewal in all areas of the university through short-term projects with the intention that successful innovations will be funded permanently by different means.
