Digital Learning: Vision & Guiding Principles

A SHARED VISION FOR DIGITAL LEARNING

Digital learning at McMaster enabled by our people will engage our educators, learners, and community partners wherever they are with our world class educational opportunities. We will leverage technology to enhance teaching and learning, foster inclusive excellence, and cultivate innovative learning spaces.

Our Guiding Principles

People-centered: At McMaster, our educators, staff, and learners are our greatest asset, without whom digital tools could not be implemented, supported, or accessed. The University is committed to recognizing and valuing the time invested in developing and delivering digital learning. As our educators choose to continue to employ technologies in their teaching, the University will invest in staff, time, and resources to provide both educators and learners with high quality experiences.

Learning First: Wherever learning happens – whether in the classroom, research group, laboratory, studio, field, virtual space, library, community, etc. – we strive to create environments that foster effective learning experiences that are engaging and driven by curiosity. Consideration of learning outcomes will drive decisions to use appropriate pedagogies, modalities and technologies.

Fostering Belonging: We are committed to fostering learning communities that are built on respect and a sense of belonging in all learning environments. The procurement and use of technologies and digital learning tools will support equitable access to education that makes our university inclusive for everyone and ensure that diverse ways of knowing are respected and valued.

Flexibility Forward: Digital learning will help meet the diverse needs of our campus community and will allow our learners to have more agency over their university experience. With digital tools we will support the holistic student experience by providing learners with intentionally designed flexibility in the way that learners access knowledge, how they engage with resources, where and when they collaborate with peers and educators, and ways to generate new knowledge in partnership with others.
