Supporting McMaster Success: A Message To Our Campus Community

Dear Colleagues,

August is always an exciting time at McMaster as faculty members and staff across our campus finalize their plans for the upcoming fall term.

As you think of the service provider best suited to help you carry out those plans, we encourage everyone to choose our campus ancillary services. We have six ancillary units at our university:

• The Campus Store
• Continuing Education
• Hospitality Services
• Housing and Conference Services
• Media Production Services
• Parking Services

Staff working in these units know McMaster well. They interact with our faculty, staff and students daily, which helps make their services efficient and effective. In addition, any revenue spent on these services is an investment in our university.

McMaster’s budget model returns 4.5% of ancillary sales to the operating fund and that revenue is redistributed to Student Affairs and to our six Faculties. We believe that using McMaster’s ancillary services is a win-win.

As communicated in June when the consolidated budget was released, McMaster is in a positive financial position at a time when Ontario universities face challenges due to decreased international enrolment and the ongoing tuition and grants freeze.

We have a modest surplus excluding items considered one-time, in large part thanks to the careful planning and prudent spending of our academic, financial and administrative leaders.

One way to continue our smart money management is to use our campus service providers whenever possible.

We are sharing below a list of the services McMaster provides in-house for those not familiar with all of our ancillary services.
