Message from Provost Tighe: Campus safety and well-being

Dear McMaster faculty members and staff,

As we head back to campus for the beginning of the fall term, I want to make sure we all feel safe in our teaching and learning environment.

The act of gender and identity-based violence that took place at the University of Waterloo in June has led to many discussions at university campuses over the summer, including here at McMaster.

As a result of those discussions, faculty members across our campus have been asked to ensure that classroom information is not publicly visible in any physical or electronic location. I want to thank Matheus Grasselli, deputy provost, Kim Dej, vice-provost, Teaching and Learning, and Steve Hranilovic, vice-provost and dean of Graduate Studies for providing that direction.

There are other ways we can work together to help keep our campus safe.

McMaster has a Safety App that every faculty member, staff and student should have on their phones. It is an easy download from the link on the McMaster Security Services website. The app does not track any information or movement of the user and was created so you can receive urgent emergency alerts, information on any campus closures and have access to other safety information and resources.

Please also watch the Daily News and McMaster social channels for information about testing of the campus emergency siren system. These tests are regularly held throughout the year and one is planned for the beginning of the fall term.

In addition to safety tools and awareness, we must continue nurturing our campus culture of safety and well-being. Ours is a caring academic community where we all work together to support our colleagues and students.

It is important that we all feel comfortable reporting anything we see that may be concerning and a list of contacts is provided below.

The Professor Hippo-On-Campus program is a valuable resource and I encourage everyone to consider taking this program so they are in the best position to know the signs of students who may need support.

While these safety actions are all important, a strong culture of inclusion also plays a critical part in building a welcoming and safe campus for all. McMaster’s Equity and Inclusion Office provides education, educational programs and support throughout the year and are available to help any individuals and areas that need assistance.
