The office of the Provost and Vice-President (Academic) is the gathering point for all matters academic including enrolment management; program development and assessment; faculty recruitment, retention and promotion; student life; budget and space allocation; and strategic planning. The following units report to the Provost and Vice-President (Academic):
Dean, DeGroote School of Business - Khaled Hassanein
Dr. Khaled Hassanein began his term as Dean of the Faculty of Business on July 1, 2021.
Dr. Hassanein was previously Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research for the DeGroote School of Business, director of the McMaster Digital Transformation Research Centre, and McMaster’s SSHRC Leader. He received his undergraduate education at Kuwait University and completed master’s and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from the universities of Toronto and Waterloo, and an MBA from Wilfrid Laurier University.
Dean, Faculty of Engineering - Heather Sheardown
Dr. Heather Sheardown began her term as Dean of the Faculty of Engineering on July 1, 2022. She is the first woman to hold the position at McMaster.
Previously, Dr. Sheardown served as acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering between 2021 and 2022. She is a professor in the department of Chemical Engineering, scientific director of C20/20, an incubator for biomedical technologies, and a Canada Research Chair in Ophthalmic Biomaterials and Drug Delivery.
Dean and Vice-President, Faculty of Health Sciences - Paul O'Byrne
Dr. Paul O’Byrne is Dean and Vice-President of the Faculty of Health Sciences. He is a world-renowned respiratory physician, whose research and practice focus on the causes and treatment of asthma. Dr. O’Byrne has published more than 550 peer-reviewed papers and 100 book chapters and has been elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada.
The Dean and Vice-President, Health Sciences, collaborates closely with the Provost and reports directly to the President and Vice-Chancellor.
Executive Vice-Dean and Associate Vice-President, Academic, Faculty of Health Sciences - Susan Denburg
As Executive Vice-Dean and Associate Vice-President Academic in the Faculty of Health Sciences (FHS), Dr. Susan Denburg works in tandem with the Dean and Vice President, FHS to oversee academic strategy and operations.
A professor of psychiatry and behavioural neurosciences and influential champion for interdisciplinary collaboration and educational innovation, Dr. Denburg was inducted as a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2018 and was the recipient of the 2022 YWCA (Hamilton) Women of Distinction Lifetime Achievement award.
Dean, Faculty of Humanities - Pamela Swett
Dean, Faculty of Science - Maureen MacDonald
Dr. Maureen MacDonald is Dean of the Faculty of Science, leading more than 200 faculty members and 100 staff and serving nearly 8,000 undergraduate and graduate students.
Dr. MacDonald is the first woman to serve as Dean of Science at McMaster. Dr. MacDonald is an accomplished professor and internationally respected researcher. Dr. MacDonald’s research focuses on the role physical activity plays in altering arterial structure and function.
Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences - Jeremiah Hurley
Dr. Jeremiah Hurley is Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; a professor and former Chair in the Department of Economics; a member of the Centre for Health Economics and Policy Analysis, and a member of the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact (HEI), all at McMaster University.
Academic & Administrative Leaders
Deputy Provost - Matheus Grasselli
Dr. Matheus Grasselli began his term as Deputy Provost on July 1, 2022.
Dr. Grasselli was Chair of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics for four years, has served as acting director of the School of Computational Sciences and Engineering at McMaster and as Deputy Director of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences in Toronto, the premier mathematical sciences institute in Canada.
Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning - Kim Dej
Dr. Kim Dej began her term as Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning on July 1, 2022.
Previously, Dr. Dej served as acting Vice-Provost, Faculty. As Vice-Provost, Teaching and Learning, she is tasked with enhancing the quality of teaching both within and beyond instructional spaces, as well as the implementation of McMaster’s first teaching and learning strategy, which Dr. Dej helped create.
Vice-Provost and Dean of Graduate Studies - Steve Hranilovic
Dr. Steve Hranilovic is ranked among the world’s top 2 per cent of scientific experts, according to a database published by Stanford University and Elsevier.
The vice-provost and dean of graduate studies is responsible for fostering innovation, leading the expansion of interdisciplinary offerings and for enhancing the recruitment of graduate students among other duties.
Associate Vice-President (Students and Learning) & Dean of Students - Sean Van Koughnett
The AVP (Students and Learning) is also the Dean of Students and is responsible for providing vision, leadership and successful management of several diverse student affairs programs and services.
Vice-Provost (International Affairs) - Bonny Ibhawoh
Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh brings more than 30 years of teaching and research in the fields of Global Human Rights, Legal History, Peace/Conflict Studies in Europe, Africa, and North America.
The Vice-Provost (International Affairs) is responsible for providing strategic leadership for McMaster’s international portfolio, including developing strategic partnerships to enhance research, growing the university’s international presence and profile, and aligning international student recruitment strategies.
Acting Associate Vice-President (Equity & Inclusion) - Sonia Anand
Dr. Sonia Anand leads McMaster’s Equity and Inclusion Office. She is a professor of Medicine and Epidemiology in the Department of Medicine and Health Evidence and Impact at McMaster.
The AVP (Equity and Inclusion) is responsible for guiding inclusive excellence and leading the development and implementation of institution-wide strategic equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) priorities.
Dr. Anand will serve as acting associate vice-president, Equity and Inclusion effective July 1, 2022, for up to six months, or until a new associate vice-president is appointed.
Director (McMaster Museum of Art) - Carol Podedworny
Reporting to the V.P. Academic, McMaster University, and as a member of the management team, the Director and Curator, McMaster Museum of Art (MMA) is responsible for the overall operations of the Museum and for the creative management of this unit within the mandate and policies approved by McMaster University.
University Librarian - Vivian Lewis
The University Librarian is responsible for managing all operations of the McMaster University Library and is a member of the Senior Management Team of the University. The McMaster University Library is comprised of three libraries including the Mills Library (Social Sciences/Humanities), the Innis Library (Business) and the Thode Library (Science/Engineering).
Assistant Vice-President & Chief Technology Officer - Gayleen Gray
The Assistant Vice-President and Chief Technology Officer is accountable to the Provost and VP Academic and to the VP Administration for strategy, implementation, policy advice and guidance on all matters related to technology at McMaster.
